What Is a Notarial Certificate? Florida Notary Terms Explained

Understand notarial certificates in Florida — what they say, why they matter, and how to make sure your document has the right one.

When a notary notarizes your document, they attach a notarial certificate — the official wording that records what was notarized and when.

What Is a Notarial Certificate?

A notarial certificate is the notary's written statement that verifies the notarization. It includes:

  • The county and state where the notarization occurred
  • The date of notarization
  • The type of notarial act (acknowledgment, jurat, etc.)
  • The notary's signature and official seal
  • Language identifying the signer and the document

Common Types in Florida

Acknowledgment Certificate

States the signer "acknowledged before me" that they signed the document. Used for deeds, contracts, and powers of attorney. The signer can sign before the notary visit.

Jurat Certificate

States the signer "subscribed and swore to" the contents. Used for affidavits and sworn statements — the signer MUST sign in the notary's presence.

Why It Matters

An incorrect or missing certificate can invalidate your document — a deed recorded with the wrong certificate could be rejected, and title insurance may be voided. That's why using a professional notary matters.
